A celebration of dance for NYC Pride
MADBOOTS DANCE is a queer, all-male dance troupe known for its fearless athleticism and unashamed intimacy. Led by Jonathan Campbell & Austin Diaz, the company will perform a mixed program of New York and world premieres. MASC, featuring five dancers and set to a mixture of classical music such as O mio babbino caro and Op. 39: No. 15 in A Major, questions the longstanding concept of “American manhood.” In addition, the company will present the world premiere of Gay Guerrilla, a work for nine dancers inspired by Julius Eastman’s quote, “…A guerrilla is someone who is, in any case, sacrificing his life for a point of view. So, therefore, that is the reason that I use gay guerrilla, in hopes that I might be one if called upon to be one.”
Performances of MADBOOTS DANCE will be Tuesday, June 19 at 7:30pm; Thursday, June 21 at 8:00pm; and Saturday, June 23 at 8:00pm.
The week, celebrating the strength and pride of the LGBTQ community, will also include the Joyce debut of trailblazing transgender choreographer Sean Dorsey and his acclaimed company Sean Dorsey Dance, performing the anticipated New York premiere of THE MISSING GENERATION. Created after recording oral history interviews with longtime LGBTQ survivors of the early AIDS epidemic, THE MISSING GENERATION serves as a love letter to all survivors from that time. Featuring a multi-generational ensemble of performers, THE MISSING GENERATION is an extremely physical evening-length work rooted in story, and danced with precision and fearless abandon.
Performances of Sean Dorsey Dance will be Wednesday, June 20 at 7:30pm; Friday, June 22 at 8:00pm; and Saturday, June 23 at 2:00pm.
