Negotiating Enthusiastic Consent

In a world where we do not get any real sex education, and we’re all forced into a one-size-fits-all model of sexuality (cisgender, straight, long-term relationships oriented, monogamous, penis-in-vagina, missionary position), many people are dissatisfied with their sex and relationship lives. At best, they’re left wondering “Is that it? Is that all there is?”; at worst, they’re gnawed by a deep, existential sense of emptiness and hunger they don’t know how to satisfy. This is why Kenneth Play and Dr. Zhana decided to create the Smarter Sex Project, an 8-part comprehensive training designed to help you make informed decisions about your sex life. Combining Dr. Zhana’s research-based knowledge of Human Sexuality with Kenneth’s expertise on practical application, the Smarter Sex Project is kind of like taking a class on YOUR Sexuality.

The second key element in building the sex life you want (the first one was covered in Smarter Sex Project Part 1: Discovering Your Sex ID; soon available as a digital product), is providing and obtaining enthusiastic consent. Over the past couple of years, we have started emphasizing the importance of sexual consent more than ever before in U.S. history. But despite all the media buzz, we seem to be lacking a general consensus about consent, as there’s actually still much debate about it among sex educators and the best practices to negotiate consent. Furthermore, what often gets left out of these discussions is how exactly you go about the business of obtaining and providing consent in real-life sexual situations. And especially, how to do it without the much-feared “ruining of the mood.”

Contrary to popular opinion, there’s no one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to people’s preferred ways to ask and be asked for sexual consent. From requiring clear verbal consent for every single sexual act to providing “blanket consent” at the outset of a sexual situation, there are many different ways to discover and communicate boundaries. Which one gets experienced as acceptable versus crossing the line toward sexual harassment or assault will depend on your personality and past experience, your partner, the situation…

This second part of the Smarter Sex Project series is created to fill in these gaps in our knowledge and skills regarding sexual consent. Over 5 hours (delicious lunch included), we will share research-based information on sexual consent and abuse, guide you through discovering YOUR own ideal consent practices, provide strategies for how to ask for consent in a way that’s sexy, and practice how to say “yes” and “no” (sometimes harder said than done) to set the stage for “hell yes” sex. Better yet, you’ll explore your consent values in the presence of a supportive community of other like-minded individuals who will be there to compare notes and provide encouragement.

Without a firm understanding of how to navigate consent, your chances of getting hurt or potentially hurting another are significantly higher. Kenneth and Dr. Zhana will give you the facts about sexual assault and teach you strategies for ensuring consent. Using lectures, group discussions, and small group activities, they’ll cover such crucial questions as:

How common is sexual assault, and in what contexts does it occur?
What’s the difference between unwanted and nonconsensual sex?
Why/How do unwanted and unconsensual sex happen?
What kind of consent practices do I need to feel safe?
Why is it sometimes so hard to say “no”?
What are my boundaries?
How can I take responsibility for my safety?
How can I have sex/rape fantasies?

Doors Open at 12:30pm

Workshop: 1:00pm-6:00pm

Lunch: 3-4pm (provided by us!)

This event will be hosted at the sex-positive intentional community, Hacienda Villa, in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Address will be given upon reservation of ticket.

This is not a partnered event, so singles are welcome. EACH PERSON MUST PURCHASE A TICKET. In the spirit of accessibility and inclusivity, all tickets are reserved on a “pay what you can” basis. There are costs associated with producing this Intensive, and we want to use the money to produce a really awesome, high-quality event, so if you have the means, please contribute what you can. We want inclusive, comprehensive sex education to be accessible to everybody who could benefit and don’t want cost to be a barrier to such invaluable information, but we appreciate any financial assistance in helping us bring this event to life. Suggested donation is $47 (remember, this includes a delicious lunch, with carnivore, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options all available).

Additionally, two volunteers are needed to help event preparation and cleanup (approximately one hour before doors open and up to one hour after event). Please email willow@kennethplay.com if you’d like to help us out!

Consent and safety:
This is a clothes-on education event for discussion only. This event does not include touch of any kind. Self-care and consent are of the utmost importance, and none of the exercises are mandatory. Dr. Zhana and Kenneth will be there to support you in providing a safer space for you to participate.
